Fashion Month: Week 3 – Milan

By: Emily Contreras

Milan Fashion Week has just ended and I can’t even describe the happiness it has brought me. There were so many shows by my all time favorite designers, so it’s difficult for me to pick one to start talking about. Since there were so many beautiful collections I’ve picked some of my favorites to talk about.

My favorite show from September 23 was by Alberta Ferretti. If I had to describe the collection in one word I would say it was refreshing. I really enjoyed her use of light pastels and sheer fabrics. With all of her floral patterns the show screamed spring. There were very few form fitting pieces, and everything flowed beautifully like a breeze. There was also a nice contrast between sophisticated and casual looks, and I like a collection that balances those two extremes. I think this show was a very positive addition to the day one line up of Milan Fashion Week.

September 24 has presented me with a whole new challenge of choosing from Max Mara, Fendi, Emilio Pucci, Prada, and Moschino among others. In the end I’ve decided to highlight Moschino because Moschino is not your usual designer. The show, as always, was bold and creative. Not your day-to-day street clothes. I would consider Moschino to be contemporary art before I would even call it fashion. I love the playfulness and the fun in the collection and I’m always excited to see what they will come out with next. After two weeks of serious high fashion shows I really enjoy a collection like Moschino SS16.

Keeping up with the bold excitement of Moschino was Marni. Marni’s show on September 27 debuted their new SS16 ready-to-wear collection, and it was crazy. Marni didn’t skimp on bright colors and impressive symmetry. The whole collection was reminiscent of an Andy Warhol exhibit and I loved it. The sharp and professional lines of the dresses and skirts contrasted the fun intensity of the colors. I find the collection to be extremely aesthetically pleasing and I think it’s a great addition to the rest of the shows we’ve seen this year.

There are honestly so many more collections from Milan that I died for, but if I were to go into detail about all of them we’d be here all day. I urge you to look up some more collections at your leisure. You won’t be disappointed.

Next up: Paris!
