Moving On

Seniors, you know who you are. You have walked the “halls” of the Shomrei Torah campus. You know that there was once a hill, yes a hill (all you underclassmen don’t know how lucky you are), to get to the office, which at the time was situated in a trailer. Our home was a parking lot, and if our school were a person he would be homeless.

But we are not homeless any more. Nor are we nameless, as we begin our first school year officially as de Toledo High School.

The moments leading up to the momentous occasion have been many, as one of my classmates, Shelby Hettler remarks, “we’ve seen different forms of the school and all of the changes that have been made,” in reference to both the move to our new campus two years ago and this year’s name change. Similarly, Bess Djavadi states, “I have seen dTHS change a lot in my time here,” and “as a school, we have really grown.”

As the last class to know the old campus and the first to graduate from de Toledo our class has experienced lasts as well as firsts as we leave behind our high school haven, formally known as New Jew. Although this metaphor would be that much more apropos if we had been called Old Jew, I believe this “out with the old” and on with the de Toledo parallels our fleeting moments as seniors as we prepare and watch as the end of our high school career slowly approaches. Our names will not out rightly change, I won’t become a Janice or a Tanya, but I also won’t be a de Toledo or New Jew student, I won’t be a high schooler, or even a teenager for much longer. I will be a college student, an adult, a world citizen, or what have you.

As Bess once again rightly puts it, “the name change is just another necessary step in the growth of our school,” I too believe a change in name, a change in identity is needed for growth, and not just in the case of a school, but also for a person.
