“Pray for the sight of an open door”

Pray for the sight of an open door (a villanelle) by Molly G. (’23)

Be careful what you wish for

A girl remembers a time when she would run and play

Pray for the sight of an open door

Darkness and gloom shadow over in a bore

A girl is cuffed to her chair to stay

Be careful what you wish for

Clinging to the memory of before

A girl dazes out the window as the rain pours and the sky grey

Pray for the sight of an open door

Death and destruction with loneliness at the core

A girl forgets that each morning is a dying day

Be careful what you wish for

Locked inside, wishing I could do more

A girl worries about family across the way

Pray for the sight of an open door

Feeling powerless in this war

A girl sleeps because in her dreams everything is okay

Be careful what you wish for

Pray for the sight of an open door
