dTHS transformed into the streets of New York City for a night to remember. From the skylines to sparkling decorations, the auditorium was decked out by the dTHS Student Council. This year’s Homecoming dance took place on Saturday, Nov. 15, with over 150 students in attendance, a 50% increase from the previous year’s attendance.
While the bright city lights may have faded from the auditorium walls, the memories of this year’s homecoming are still bright in students’ minds.
The NYC theme was brought to life in many ways. Glittering streamers hung on the entrance doors with bright lights shining throughout the room. Every table had skyline centerpieces and the photo booth shined with broadway-like gold. Lielle A. (‘28) said, “The decorations matched New York well.”
Not all students felt the same way about the decorations. When asked if the Homecoming dance fit the New York theme, Charleigh G. (‘28) said, “I didn’t really notice the theme. I just noticed the taxi, balloons, and bagels.”
A common complaint amongst students was the high price of entry. This year, about fifty more students were in attendance than last year, but the prices remained similar. The prices this year were $35 for those who received early-bird pricing, $45 for anyone purchasing online after the deadline, and $50 at the door. More than forty students ended up paying at the door. Many students wished more things came along with the high price, like a real meal. Lielle A. (‘28) said, “I wish the tickets weren’t $50. I think more people would have come if it wasn’t that expensive.”
One of the most important parts of the dance is the food and drink selection. In past years, light snacks were served at the dance rather than a full meal. This year there was a variety of chips, cookies, and full-sized candies.
Another addition was mini bagels and cream cheese which tied in the New York theme. While the Student Council hoped the bagels would be a hit, most of them were left over by the end of the night. Charleigh G. (‘28) said, “I didn’t try the bagels because I was full from the chips.”
Next year, it’s hopeful that there will be more filling food. Mia F. (‘28), the Sophomore Secretary, said, “We plan on adding more meal-like food next year.”
Also tying in with the New York theme was the different drinks. The Central Park Cooler drink was one of the favorites. It was a spin on a typical Shirley Temple with sprite and raspberry syrup. The Statue of LiberTEA was also popular. It was an Arnold Palmer, a mix of lemonade, ice tea, and peach syrup.
In addition to the typical dancing and talking people do at the dance, there were also games, like an air hockey game and a basketball shooting game.

Another hit was the photo booth where students could take pictures with different props and leave with a print out of it. The props were also New York themed.
Overall, the dance was successful. When asked what her favorite part of the dance was, Charleigh G. (‘28) said “I liked being with my friends, the snacks and candy, and seeing who people brought as their dates.”
With so many students in attendance, the Homecoming was filled with fun, laughter, and lots of dancing. The night was one to remember.
