Back-to-Back Championships for Jags

The 2022 football season started with extremely high expectations, coming off of the 10-1 championship-winning season last year. The Jaguars walked into the season confident, especially after winning their first game against YULA handily (Yeshiva University High School).

But then de Toledo players faced the team that would be the biggest challenger for the entire season: AGBU (AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School). The Jaguars traveled to their field and lost 17–14,  the second loss in two seasons. Jags quickly realized this year was going to be tougher than the last, and it was going to be a challenge to win the championship and go back-to-back this year.

With seven seniors starting, they made easy work out of the rest of the league until finally playing AGBU again at the end of the season. This was a big matchup because they were the best two teams in the league. Both teams had already clinched the playoffs, so the game did not have many playoff implications. AGBU came to deToledo’s field and demolished them in every aspect of the game: offense, defense, and special teams, winning by multiple touchdowns. This gave AGBU not only an undefeated season, but the utmost confidence for the rest of the season.

Entering the playoffs, the Jaguars faced a familiar foe in an Oakwood team they had already beaten twice. The game started slowly with very little scoring and both offenses seemed almost uncomfortable. The game came down to the last drive where the Jaguars got the ball, down by 3, with around two minutes left in the game. The Jaguars marched down the field, led by catches downfield by senior Andrew G. down to the 5-yard line. It came down to a 4th down and 5 with less than a minute left in the game. The quarterback rolled out and found senior Max C. for a lead-taking touchdown with little time left. The Jaguars’ defense stood strong on their last drive to send the Jaguars to their second championship appearance in a row.

However, the Jaguars would then have to face their largest adversary of the year, and their only two losses–AGBU.  AGBU had demolished their semifinal opponent and, undefeated, had insane amounts of confidence going into this championship game.

The first play from scrimmage showed that the Jaguars were here to play, with an interception returned for a touchdown by Max C. The Jaguars’ defense got another stop, then scored an offensive touchdown and quickly came out with a 14-0 lead. However, AGBU would not go down easy. Their offensive went right down the field, scoring a touchdown and cutting the score to 14-8. Both offenses then went quiet without much action till about 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. AGBU had the ball in the red zone and de Toledo freshman Daniel G. made the biggest play of the season in the form of a red zone interception. The Jaguars offense needed only one first down to seal the game, and after a run by the running back and a quarterback sneak, the game was sealed, and the Jaguars won back-to-back championships.
