“Mazel Tov to our 73 Presidential Service Award recipients!” said a June 10 email to the de Toledo High School community.
“Each of these students have gone above and beyond our school’s service requirement, completing numerous hours of service this year, responding to people in need and making a positive impact in our society.
We are proud to have so many students at de Toledo High School committed to Tikkun Olam — repairing the world.
Congratulations!” said the email, listing the names of students who volunteered 100 hours or more this year.

The Presidential Volunteer Service Award is a prestigious national award established in 2003 by President George W. Bush that highlights volunteers’ commitment to service. Colleges and universities look favorably upon young applicants who demonstrate a commitment to community service.
But this year students will have to wait until funding is restored to receive their awards:
“We regret to inform you that we received an email on May 27 from The President’s Volunteer Service Award Organization informing us that effective immediately this program is on a temporary pause and they are not accepting any orders. They will notify us as soon as operations resume,” the school’s email continued.
Part of the sweeping cuts made by the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, programs administered under the AmeriCorps program “had been terminated by the federal government,” according to The Daily Montanan.
According to NPR, “[C]ombined cuts have gutted a federal agency created three decades ago as a way for people to serve their country.”
