If you’re looking for a laid-back elective that offers high-level instruction while also broadening your interests, the Table Tennis Physical Education class could be for you.
Instructed by Bella Livshin, a formerly ranked table tennis player, the table tennis after-school P.E is a fun way for students to earn a third of a P.E. credit each trimester.
Bella has been coaching table tennis for many years, and she is loved by all her students.
Dylan S. (‘28) said that Bella has made this extracurricular unique for him, and is part of the reason why he has been attending since last fall.
“This elective is good for beginners because Bella pushes everyone to work to their fullest extent, no matter their skill level,” Dylan said.
I had the opportunity to visit this class after school one day and was able to see firsthand how this was true. Bella doesn’t just watch everyone play, she teaches students one-on-one at their level.

Bella says a reason she thinks table tennis is a great elective for students is because it “helps reduce stress levels.”
“Playing table tennis [here is meant to be fun,]” she said.
From teaching students how to hit the ping-pong ball at the right angle, to how to put uncontrollable spin on their serve, Bella is an expert at teaching at all levels.
Dylan also said, “This elective is very fun because Bella plays against us, making it more challenging.“
Beyond the learning experience you get, students also get the chance to build connections with new people.
The atmosphere of the class is welcoming. Everybody was motivated to learn something new, and was enjoying their time there.
Every student has the opportunity to play a casual game of table tennis at any time, as there are plenty of tables for everyone to participate.
I got the opportunity to play against Dylan during my time in the class, and noticed the unpredictable spin he put on the ball.
“Bella taught me how to spin the ball better — place your hand on the paddle like you’re making a sideways L, and move your hand curving upwards,” he explained. “I’ve improved my skills a lot and can now hang with Bella in games.” he added, even though she probably went easy on him.
