As President Trump progresses beyond his first 100 days, his decisions have proven to be the main unifying force for Democrats across America. Democrats have appropriately come together to resist Trump’s actions and engage in the political process in a manner that has acquired national attention.

Less than ten days after his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order that banned citizens from Libya, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the US. This executive order caused thousands to protest across the country in cities and airports. NPR reported that “more than 800 people protested” in Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Jan. 28. Furthermore, a day later, CBS reported that almost 10,000 people protested at Battery Park, New York City.

More than a month into his presidency, Trump revoked protections for transgender students. He wanted Secretary Betsy Devos to repeal an Obama-era guideline, which “instructed public schools that they must allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that align with a child’s chosen gender identity,” as NBC News reported. This decision resulted in hundreds of gay rights supporters rallying outside the White House on Feb. 22, chanting, “No hate, no fear, trans students are welcome here.”

About a month and a half following Trump’s inauguration, House Republicans, with Trump’s support, released a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The Republicans’ plan included defunding Planned Parenthood, cutting support for Medicare, and ultimately causing 24 million Americans to lose their health insurance by 2026, as a Congressional Budget Office report projected. This bill resulted in massive numbers of constituents attending the town halls of Republican Congressmen in order to convince them to oppose the bill. Furthermore, thousands of constituents called and wrote emails and letters to their Representatives to show opposition for the plan. Republican Representative Thomas Massie reported that he received 275 phone calls. The assembly of thousands of people resulted in the House Republicans’ bill to fail in the House, which has a Republican majority.

Trump’s actions have not only resulted in Democrats coming together to oppose bills and executive orders, but have also led more Democrats to get involved in the political process.

A week after Trump’s inauguration, The Hill reported that a new organization called Run for Something “has recruited more than 1,200 millennials to run for office.” These millennials want to lead the resistance against Trump’s actions, and stand up against Trump’s divisive narrative.

In 2014, then-Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo defeated his Democratic opponent by around 34 percent in the race for a House of Representatives seat. But on April 11, 2017, a special election was held in the same district, and the Republican candidate only defeated his Democratic rival by about 6.8 percent. Although Democrats did not win this election, they sent a clear message of opposition to Trump’s actions. The results were noticed by Americans across the country.

Georgia’s 6th congressional district held a special election on April 18, 2017. The seat contended for in this election has not gone for Democrats since 1979, but Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff was only about two percentage points from the 50 percent needed to win the seat without a runoff. Ossoff’s campaign raised more than eight million dollars for this election. It was a record amount for a congressional candidate in a single quarter, and 17 times greater than his nearest competitor in the election. The Democrats in Georgia’s 6th congressional district came together, cultivated energy and voted, which fiercely showed opposition to Trump’s behavior.

The Democrats’ demonstrations have proven that organizing, protesting and engaging can have an impact. The question remains – will this drive to combat Trump’s implementations continue?

If Democrats want to have a successful mid-term election, they cannot allow this momentum to die down. It is imperative to listen to Secretary Hillary Clinton’s advice: “We need to resist, insist, persist and enlist” and not to give up, for it will bring the best outcome for Democrats in 2018.
