Fashion Month: Week 2 – London

By: Emily Contreras

I’m not usually one to exaggerate (that’s a lie, I totally am), but when I woke up to see that the Burberry show had been posted I just about died. The whole show was perfect: the location, the music, the models, and most importantly, the clothes. Burberry is the quintessential British brand, and never fails to attract celebrity appearances including Anna Wintour, Cara Delevingne, and more. The show was like a breath of fresh air with pastel flowers and open space and an orchestra playing in the background of the show. The collection itself was nothing short of breathtaking. Burberry used their classic beiges, navys, and whites, but they really played with texture in this collection. My favorite was a beige lace dress that is reminiscent of a brunch on the beach or on a cruise. I can’t talk about a Burberry collection without mentioning the trench coat. Burberry is most known for their classic trench coats and they outdid themselves in this show with the introduction of lace trench coats. They were absolutely stunning and if I had a spare $5,000 I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one right now. I don’t think I’ve ever been so impressed with a London Fashion Week show, and I’m going to be watching the show over and over until I have the whole collection memorized–it’s just that good.

London Fashion Week SS16 took place from September 18-22nd, and it was a huge success. With shows by Felder Felder, Temperley London, Topshop Unique, Burberry, and Ashish among others, there was a lot to get excited about. London Fashion Week is my favorite because it’s just so different than New York Fashion Week. New York Fashion Week shows are generally pretty bold and eclectic whereas the shows in London are more classy and chic. The perfect dichotomy between the two weeks really strikes me and I find it to be fascinating.

If you want an example of a collection that mixes sassy and sweet look no further because Topshop Unique does this exact thing with so much elegance. One of the patterns that was prominent throughout the collection was polka dots. This is surprising to me because polka dots haven’t generally been so popular, but I’m a huge fan and if this becomes a trend for next summer I will be thrilled. Another thing I love about this collection is how clean it is, if that makes sense. I’m into the classic British style of blazers and midi-skirts and the beautiful modesty of it all. As far as colors go Topshop went with a lot of black and blue, which is unusual for a summer collection, but I could picture myself walking through the city wearing these outfits during summer time. I think it would be one thing if this was a Cruise collection, but for a chic summer in the city these are the perfect pieces for mixing and matching.

I can’t wait to see all of these pieces in action next spring!

Next week: Milan!
