As the next election approaches and Generation Z is beginning to start voting and voicing their opinions, I must express the need to register to vote.
Voting allows for a representation of people’s interests and helps shape American democracy. The more people participate in future elections, the more their opinions will be expressed and accommodated. Not only this, but voting helps hold elected officials accountable, and citizens will be able to support candidates who align with their values. Voting helps advocate for change in society and helps protect our rights, which the people of America fought so hard for.
I interviewed de Toledo history teacher Thomas Wiebe about his opinion on registering to vote:
Why is it important for younger people to register to vote?
“Well, Generation Z is actually going to be the biggest voting demographic coming up, and yet they tend to be young people, and in general, young people tend to vote the least. If more young people register to vote, they are more likely to vote, and they can make the changes they want to see in society.”
Some seniors might say, “My vote won’t matter and won’t impact the system.” How would you respond to that?
“Well, I would say that they are suffering from low voter efficacy, which is something we need to change the narrative about. Many people forget just a few thousand votes often determine local elections, and those are the things that impact us. Local taxes, local ordinances. Recently, there was a vape ban in California, so is that something you care about – well, you have a pretty big say in these kinds of decisions.”
If you could leave one message for Prowler readers, what would that message be?
“My message would be: you’re the future. Go out and take it.”
Voting is one of the most crucial parts of American democracy and, without your vote, you won’t be able to make a change in society and live the life that best suits your needs. Registering to vote is the first step to taking action and fighting for your values and opinions. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to choose to vote, so don’t take that for granted! We must use the rights our ancestors fought so hard for, and we must continue to try and make a more representative government.
