NFL Free Agency Predictions
March 9, 2017
The NFL Free Agency period is beginning on Thursday and it is sure to be a memorable one. When a player becomes a free agent, that means that the contract with their current team is up and they can either sign a new contract or make a deal with a different team. If your team has been struggling, free agency is the perfect time to try and lure some big name players to your team. Let’s begin with what we know already.
As of Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys announced that they would not resign quarterback Tony Romo. Romo (36) has the most passing yards and touchdowns from any quarterback in that franchise. The one thing he has not given to Dallas yet is a Super Bowl ring. After injuries in the previous preseason, as well as the emergence of backup quarterback Dak Prescott, the Cowboys are ready to move on. There is a new question: where will Romo play next year? In 2012, Peyton Manning was released from the Indianapolis Colts at the age of 36 and signed with the Denver Broncos. In the 4 years he was there, he made it to the Super Bowl twice and won it once. The Broncos have enough of a foundation for Romo to fit right in and start winning games. In the already competitive division that the Broncos are in, the path to the Super Bowl would be much more difficult for Romo.
On Wednesday, Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall announced he would sign with the New York Giants once free agency starts. The Giants already have a top receiver in Odell Beckham Jr. This signing could either make the Giants a legitimate Super Bowl contender or hurt them. Last year, Marshall (32) had a less than stellar year. Coming off a 2015 year in which he eclipsed the 1500 receiving yards mark, he had only 788 this year. However, after choosing to not resign receiver Victor Cruz, the Giants are in need of a new receiver. Marshall will do just that.
Finally, running back Adrian Peterson is on the market. In 2012 he won the MVP award after tearing his ACL and MCL the season prior. Peterson (31) is entering the final stages of his career. However, most running backs at this age have much wear and tear and are usually not the same player they used to be. Many said that Peterson would not be the same player he used to be after tearing his ACL and MCL, but he shocked the world and won the MVP award. I do not think Peterson’s age will be much of a factor when teams are considering contracting him. Peterson himself has said that the New York Giants, Houston Texans, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be a good fit for him in 2017. We should not leave out other teams that have expressed interest in him, like the Oakland Raiders and the defending Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. The Raiders have a solid offensive line, which is always a good thing for a running back to have, and the Patriots just won the Super Bowl, which is always very attractive for a free agent. All we know is that any team that signs him is very lucky to have him and should prepare for a fantastic year.
As we await the free agency opening on Thursday, many changes will be made as every team tries to make its final roster adjustments before the NFL draft in April. Who knows, maybe your favorite team will land a big name free agent this year.
