NFL Free Agency Opens

On Thursday, NFL Free Agency opened and teams are already making moves around the league. Let’s see who has done what and why.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills started making moves in the early hours of Thursday morning, improving their team. It all started when they decided to keep their quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Although Taylor has struggled in his two years in Buffalo (going 14-14 in his 28 total starts with the Bills), the team has decided to restructure his contract. The Bills also upgraded their fullback position by signing Mike Tolbert. They even improved in the kicker position by signing former Seattle Seahawk Steven Hauschka to a 4-year deal. However, their Pro Bowl cornerback, Stephon Gilmore, is signing with the rival New England Patriots. This move is considered very wise by many because the Bills are saving about $14 million by not re-signing Gilmore. This money can be used on other free agent signings.

San Francisco 49ers

I must say that I really like what the 49ers have done so far in free agency. The team responded by signing former Chicago Bears quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley. Former Baltimore Ravens fullback Kyle Juszczyk also was signed to the squad. The Niners also signed wide receiver Marquise Goodwin from the Buffalo Bills. Goodwin just had his career high in receptions (29). Adding to their receiving core, the Niners also signed Pierre Garcon from the Washington Redskins, who brings his veteran skills and leadership to this young San Francisco team. Speaking of receivers, Aldrick Robinson was also added to the roster – he caught 20 catches and 3 touchdowns with the Atlanta Falcons last year. Some more key additions include former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith, who led the Oakland Raiders in tackles last year, as well as kicker Robbie Gould from the New York Giants. The 49ers have definitely made a big splash so far in free agency.

New England Patriots

The defending Super Bowl champions have made a few moves in free agency this year. Firstly, they signed Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore. This is a helpful move for them, as they lost Logan Ryan and are in danger of losing their other corner Malcolm Butler. The Patriots also upgraded their already solid position at tight end with the addition of Dwayne Allen. This means that Martellus Bennett, one of their current tight ends, is likely to depart. The defending champs are also frontrunners in the teams that will likely sign Adrian Peterson, the former MVP running back from the Minnesota Vikings. The Pats are doing all the right moves to perhaps become back to back Super Bowl champions.

Cleveland Browns

I wanted to end this article by talking about the Cleveland Browns. The team that had only one win last year is setting itself up for a better 2017 year. The Browns did not make the most moves in free agency, but one can argue that they made the most necessary ones. A big problem they had last year was the offensive line. You cannot argue that the quarterbacks or running backs aren’t doing their jobs if the O-line isn’t cooperating. The lone bright spot on the O-line however, is veteran Joe Thomas. Thomas has played and started in 160 straight games for the Browns and has never seen postseason play. He has had opportunities to leave the team but stayed in Cleveland nonetheless. Thomas will be joined on the offensive line with key additions, JC Tretter from the Green Bay Packers, and Kevin Zeitler from the Cincinnati Bengals. Tretter started for the Packers in the beginning of last year, but injured his knee in the 7th game of the season. Zeitler was a former first round draft pick and was a big free agent target by many teams. The Browns also added former LA Ram Kenny Britt, who will provide his experience in the receiver spot. Now, I’m not saying the Browns will automatically be Super Bowl contenders, but these free agent signings plus a smart drafting strategy (the Browns have the number one overall draft pick in the NFL draft this year and the number 12 overall pick) may lead to great success in Cleveland this upcoming year.

After just one full day of NFL free agency, so much has happened. There are still big name players on the market like Tony Romo and Adrian Peterson. Who knows what will happen next?
