I went into “Wicked” (2024) with low expectations due to my lack of experience with musicals. I’ve watched movies like “The Lion King” and “High School Musical,” but this movie seemed like a whole new level. I had heard amazing things about it, but I wasn’t sure if they were 100% true or not. After watching this movie, I was flabbergasted by what I saw.
First off, I have never seen a movie with such a perfectly fitted cast. Everyone fit their roles perfectly, and I don’t think a better cast could’ve been chosen. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were such amazing fits for their roles as they matched their characters perfectly. I saw clips of the musical with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth and wasn’t sure how anyone could match them. Grande and Erivo surpassed them, in my opinion. Not only were they both more musically talented, but also more entertaining and enthusiastic. Grande fits Glinda’s peppy and oblivious personality perfectly, and Erivo fits Elpheba’s introverted personality perfectly.
The plot was so touching that it could even make a grown man cry, that’s including me. Seeing Elpheba’s neglectful childhood was so hard that, in some ways, I felt like I could relate to her, and some of my friends could too. In some ways, I was questioning how this movie was rated PG due to how emotionally terrifying and touching it was at times.
Overall, this movie was and will be a musical and cinematic masterpiece for years to come. It’s everything that a musical should be and will be tough to top.
