The Race to the Super Bowl

On Saturday, the NFL playoffs begin. After a season full of crazy twists and turns, we have finally made it to postseason play. For the fifth time in NFL history, both teams who made it to the Super Bowl the previous season did not make the playoffs the following year.

The season started with the emergence of the Dallas Cowboys. After their star quarterback Tony Romo was injured in the preseason, all hope for 2016 seemed to be lost. They were now relying on their first round draft pick Ezekiel Elliott at running back, and their rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. The Cowboys lost their first game of the season. Everyone counted them out as contenders. Then, the Cowboys responded by winning 11 straight games. They finished the season 13-3.

On the AFC side, the Oakland Raiders shocked everybody when they clinched a playoff spot in 2016. A young team that hadn’t made the playoffs for the past 14 years, they were not projected to be a part of the postseason. All that changed with third year quarterback Derek Carr playing his best season yet. Carr was considered a league MVP candidate for most of the year, but his season was cut short after breaking his fibula in the penultimate game of the year. Although the Raiders ended up winning that particular game, they lost the next week’s matchup against the Denver Broncos, which dropped the Raiders from the number 2 seed to the number 5 seed in the playoff bracket. However, they are also making history by starting their rookie quarterback Connor Cook in their playoff game Saturday. He will be the only player in NFL history to make his first career start in the postseason.

The Wildcard round of the playoffs starts Saturday afternoon and continues through Sunday evening. On Saturday, the Oakland Raiders take on the Houston Texans to kick off the postseason, and after that matchup the Detroit Lions play the Seattle Seahawks. Sunday’s games feature the Miami Dolphins playing the Pittsburgh Steelers and after that game takes place, the New York Giants go up against the Green Bay Packers.

The Raiders-Texans game will be important for a few reasons. First, both teams have quarterback concerns. The Raiders are without Derek Carr and are starting a rookie, while the Texans’ starting quarterback Brock Osweiler is playing Saturday, but previously this season, Osweiler was benched for not playing well and for throwing too many interceptions. The Texans have a solid defense but virtually no offense, especially when Osweiler is at the helm. Both Osweiler and Cook, the Raiders’ rookie, have something to prove Saturday and what better way to do so than on the postseason stage?

The Seahawks are heavily favored to win against the Lions. The high flying hawks are coming off a 10-5-1 regular season as the Lions finished at 9-7. Even though the team’s regular season records are not very different, their quarterback situations are. The Seahawks are lead by Super Bowl winning quarterback Russell Wilson. The Lions’ starter Matthew Stafford is playing through dislocated middle finger. The Lions are 1-3 since Stafford has dislocated his finger and the first round of the playoffs doesn’t look pretty for them.

The Miami Dolphins are definitely the underdog in their matchup against the Steelers. Ryan Tannehill, the franchise quarterback of the Dolphins, partially tore his ACL and will not be present on Sunday. The Steelers are fully healthy and ready to dominate in this matchup. In order to ensure their health, the Steelers rested their starting quarterback, running back, and wide receiver on the final game of the regular season.

The matchup that will most likely be the best of the weekend is the Giants vs. Packers game. Two veteran quarterbacks will face off against each other in this primetime battle. Eli Manning of the Giants has two Super Bowl victories and one of the top receivers in the league by his side, Odell Beckham Jr. The Packers have the great Aaron Rodgers at QB and a great supporting cast to back him up. Having started the regular season 4-6, playoff dreams seemed to be lost. However, they are on a six game winning streak and finished the regular season red-hot at 10-6. The Packers’ high powered offense is eighth best in the league, while the Giants have the 25th best. On the defensive side, the Giants are tenth best in the league and the Packers are ranked 22. Judging from the rankings of each team and just the pure hype leading up to this game, it will surely be the game of the weekend.

Even though not all games are as evenly matched as this one, it is the playoffs, and anything can happen. Everything can change for a team in just one play. Be sure to watch this Saturday as the race to the Super Bowl begins.
