This weekend, the dTHS team competed at the State Qualifying Tournament in debate. We sent:
- Gabby Vanderlaan (Lincoln-Douglas)
- Ryan Ofman (Lincoln-Douglas)
- Dani Shulman (Lincoln-Douglas)
- Roni Farkash (Lincoln-Douglas)
- Eli Spiegel (Lincoln-Douglas)
- Elliot Freeman/Josh Lousky (Parliamentary)
At this tournament, you debate until you lose twice. They host debate after debate until, eventually, only a handful of debaters are left standing: six in Lincoln-Douglas and five in Parliamentary.
Roni and Eli both made it past the first elimination rounds on Friday. On Saturday, Roni was eventually eliminated in a pair of closely contested rounds. Then, Eli, after a grueling series of hard-fought matches, went up against Granada Hill’s top-ranked debater. The winner would advance to the State Championship, and the loser would not. On a 3-0 decision… Eli won!
WHICH MEANS THAT, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN dTHS HISTORY, WE’RE GOING TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
But Eli won’t be the only one! Next weekend, on 2/27, we are having our Student Congress qualifier, and the next weekend, from 3/4 to 3/5, we are having our Speech qualifier. Our goal is to get as many competitors as possible to the California championship tournament in April — and we’re well on our way!
Thanks for all your support and love! We’ll make you proud!
