Prowler contributing writer Griffen Carabet (’23)  has won First Prize in the 2021 Jewish Scholastic Journalism Awards, and Jonah Weisner (’20) has earned an Honorable Mention in the video category.

Congratulations to Carabet for his award-winning opinion piece “The Privileges Judaism Brings” in Category 7: First-person Opinion or Experience Regarding Judaism or Israel. Judges described Carabet’s entry as “A thoughtful personal piece about what it means to be privileged and how the author is grateful to be a Jewish person and a student at his Jewish school.“

Weisner, Prowler Sports Editor (2019-2020),  received an Honorable Mention in Category 10: Video Reporting of any Jewish or Israel-related story for “The Odyssey of Jonah and Aidan.”

“This entry relies on clips from cell phone video as two students recount leaving at 5 a.m. to walk nine miles to school and get there on time. It is a fun post,” said judges in their comments. [Editor’s note: this video is currently offline.]

Student journalists from eight Jewish high schools and an online Jewish teen magazine won prizes in the 2021 Jewish Scholastic Journalism Awards, the Jewish Scholastic Press Association announced May 2.

This year’s contest featured more than 100 entries in 11 categories — including news, feature and opinion writing; photojournalism; page design and video — for reporting on Jewish communities, religion, education, institutions, activism or culture, along with a special category that was added for coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

All contest judging was done by JSPA Board Members Susan Freudenheim and Kathleen Neumeyer.
